Welcome to
THE NEXT BIG DEFENSE
Shaw Air Force Base
Shaw Air Force Base is home to the Air Force's largest combat ready F-16 wing -- the 20th Fighter Wing -- whose mission is to provide, project and sustain combat-ready air forces. Shaw also serves as home to Headquarters Ninth Air Force/U.S. Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT), Fifteenth Air Force, and U.S. Army Central Command (ARCENT).
Economic Impact on the Region
SHAW Air Force Base is one of the largest military bases operated by the United States. Out of the eight (8) major military installations in the state, Sumter has the third-largest military presence by the total volume of military-related activity (behind Charleston and Columbia).
Shaw Air Force Base is a tremendous asset for our region. When local airmen and soldiers separate from the military, they posses exceptional skills and abilities that meet the needs of the modern day workplace.
“Shaw Air Force Base enjoys a good relationship with many businesses and government entities in Sumter. The Sumter community is welcoming to our mission and airmen. We are included in and invited to share input on community matters and participate in enriching activities to further enhance the experience of our airmen while they are at Shaw.”
